Stefan De Hert, MD, PhD, FESAIC

Stefan De Hert received his medical degree at the University of Antwerp, Belgium in 1984. After his anesthesiology residency training he accepted a faculty position in the Department of Anesthesiology of the Antwerp University Hospital and served as vice chairman of this Department and Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Antwerp for over 10 years. From 2007 to 2010 he acted as Professor of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Director of the Division of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. From 2011 until 2023, he was Professor of Anesthesiology and Director of Research at the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine of the University Hospital of Ghent. Currently he is emeritus Professor of Anesthesiology at the Department of Basic and Applied Medical Sciences at Ghent University.
He has authored and co-authored over 280 articles in peer-reviewed journals and many chapters in different textbooks (Scopus H-index = 51). He has been Editor for Anesthesiology and the European Journal of Anaesthesiology, Executive Section Editor for Anesthesia and Analgesia and Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia and he acts as regular reviewer for several major anesthesiology, cardiology and surgery journals.
Prof. De Hert acted as chair of the ESA (European Society of Anaesthesiology) Scientific Committee and was President of the ESA from 2017 to 2019. He also acted as chair of the Education and Training Committee and board member of the ESAIC (European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care) and council member of the WFSA (World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists). Currently he is a board member of the BeSARPP (Belgian Society of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management).

Vincent Bonhomme is Head and Professor of Anesthesiology at the University Hospital of Liege and the University of Liege, Belgium, as well as the Principal Investigator of the Anesthesia and Perioperative Neuroscience Laboratory, GIGA-Consciousness Thematic Unit, GIGA Research, Liege University, Belgium.
He is deeply involved in the Belgian Society of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, Perioperative medicine and Pain management (BeSARPP), a Member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine, deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Acta Anaesthesiologica Belgica, and the Chair of the Neuroanesthesia Subcommittee of the European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC).
His main clinical activity englobes neurosurgical anesthesiology and algology. He has long been involved in clinical and fundamental research, with main topics of interest including, among others, the brain mechanisms of the alteration of consciousness during general anesthesia and nociception monitoring. He is the author or co-author of more than 120 publications in peer-reviewed and referenced journals, as well as of several book chapters. He has been invited to give more than 50 conferences throughout the world, and has served as a reviewer for more than 40 scientific journals. He has a H-Index of 41 (source: Google Scholar).
Marc Van de Velde, MD, PhD, EDRA

Marc obtained his medical degree at the Catholic University Leuven Belgium. He completed his residency in Anaesthesiology in 1996 at the University Hospitals Leuven. In 2000, he received his PhD degree following research related to metabolic support of the stunned myocardium. Until 2010 he was clinical director of obstetric anesthesia and non-operating room anesthesia (NORA). Since 2010, he is Head of the Department Anesthesiology and Professor at the Leuven University. He has given >525 invited lectures, has published over 320 articles and more than 30 book chapters. His H-index at SCOPUS is 50. He is within the top 1% most cited authors in his field in 2020.
He is editor of 3 textbooks in obstetric anesthesia: “Maternal Critical Care” (2013, Cambridge University Press), “Obstetric Anesthesia” (2016, Oxford University Press) and “Anesthesie en de Normale Zwangerschap” (2017, Acco). He was President of the ESRA society. He is member of the Executive Committee of the OAA, he is PROSPECT Chair and Chair of the ESRA Educational Committee. Currently he is Editor-In-Chief of Best Practice and Research: Clinical Anaesthesiology. He also is Deputy Editor in Chief of the European Journal of Anaesthesiology. His primary clinical interest focuses on obstetric anesthesia and anesthesia for children and adults with congenital heart disease undergoing non cardiac surgery. Most of his current research focuses on obstetric anesthesia.
He is married with Eva and has five children, Sofie, Michiel, Bas, Ella and Juliette. He loves to travel en play golf. Italian food and wine make him smile ! Dog Toto and cat Copper make sure he is never bored.

Sarah Devroe, MD, PhD

Sarah obtained her medical degree at the Catholic University Leuven Belgium. She completed her anesthesia training at the university hospitals of that same university and has been working there as a consultant anesthetist since 2003. Her clinical work/research interest focuses on obstetric and pediatric anaesthesia and the influence of anesthesia on the developing brain. She published several papers and book chapters on obstetric anesthesia and has given lectures at various national and international meetings. She recently defended and completed her PhD-thesis entitled “New anesthetic strategies for pediatric and fetal interventions to improve heemodynamic stability and neurocognitive outcome”.
Beyond anesthesia she dedicates her time to her treasurable family (especially my three joyful daughters, Anna, Rose and Julia) and her dear friends.

He is Chair of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesiology Committee of the French Society of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine (SFAR), Member of the Research Committee of the European Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (ESAIC) and Past-Chair of the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesiology Committee of the ESAIC.
His main scientific fields of interest are cardiac anaesthesiology, hemodynamic monitoring and optimization, cardiac physiology and pathophysiology, cardiac biomarkers, and cardiac risk stratification and assessment.

Waynice Neiva De Paula Garcia, MD PhD, TSA-SBA

Dr. Waynice Neiva de Paula Garcia is a consultant anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesiology at AC Camargo Cancer Center, as well as several other esteemed hospitals in São Paulo, Brazil. She focuses her clinical practice and research on general anesthesia, pharmacological modulation of the central and autonomic nervous systems, and perioperative care and monitoring.
She holds both a PhD and a postdoctoral degree in medical sciences from the University of São Paulo (FMRP-USP). Dr. Garcia participated in a prestigious visiting scholarship program at Massachusetts General Hospital and the MIT/Harvard Division of Health Science and Technology in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
In addition to actively participating in academia as an assistant professor in Harvard's Principles and Practice of Clinical Research, she has already supervised several master's and doctoral students.
Dr. Garcia's research interests extend to the effects of anesthesia on patient outcomes and the innovation of anesthetic techniques. She is a member of several national and international scientific societies, including Brazilian, European, and American Societies of Anesthesiology. Throughout her career, she has authored numerous papers and book chapters on anesthetic techniques and presented her findings at various national and international conferences.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Dr. Garcia is deeply passionate about her family, cherishing time spent with loved ones, and embracing life's endless discoveries.
Rachel Kearns, MBChB MRCP FRCA EDRA MD

Rachel studied medicine at the University of Dundee, graduating in 2002. She trained in general medicine prior to completing anaesthesia training, and was appointed as a consultant anaesthetist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 2012. Her sub-specialty interests are obstetric and regional anaesthesia, and her research involves the linkage of routinely collected healthcare data to investigate associations between obstetric anaesthetic interventions and maternal, neonatal and childhood outcomes. She has published multiple articles in the field of obstetric and regional anaesthesia, and authored several book chapters, as well as lecturing at national and international meetings.
Rachel holds an NHS Research Scotland Senior Researcher Fellowship, is a board member of the Obstetrics Anaesthetists’ Association, and was previously the inaugural research network lead for Regional Anaesthesia UK.
In her spare time, Rachel enjoys swimming and has recently joined a masters swim team, which she manages to attend when not taking her kids to all of their various activities.
Patricia Lavand’homme MD, PhD

Prof Patricia Lavand’homme is working in St Luc Hospital, University Catholic of Louvain, Brussels, Belgium. She is the director of the Acute Postoperative Pain and Transitional Pain Services. She is dedicated to Orthopaedic Anaesthesia, Obstetric Anaesthesia and perioperative pain management. She has a PhD degree in Medical Science.
Dr Lavand’homme did a visiting Scholarship Program at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston Salem, North Carolina, USA (in thePain Mechanisms Laboratory of Pr Eisenach). She has served as Chairperson of the Scientific Subcommittee “Acute and Chronic Pain” in the European Society of Anesthesiologists – ESA. She also was part of the IASP (International Association for the Study of Pain) Task Force working with WHO on Pain Classification for ICD-11 (working on chronic postsurgical and posttraumatic pain).
She is currently a member of the PROSPECT (Procedure Specific Postoperative Pain Management) working group. Her research interests are the management of postoperative pain in the context of enhanced recovery programmes and the transition of acute to chronic pain after surgery. She is member of several national and international scientific societies.
Fernande Lois, MD

Dr Lois received her medical degree in 2001 at the Catholic University of Leuven (UCLouvain). She was resident in anaesthesiology from 2001 to 2006 at the Catholic University of Louvain (UCLouvain).
She is currently Head of Clinic in the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the University Hospital of Liege, Sart-Tilman since 2017. Her clinical activity is mainly situated in outpatient surgery and anaesthesia outside the operating theatre. She is also lecturer at the Department of Public Health of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Liège
She is simulation instructor since 2009 after obtaining a university degree in Paris V Descartes and she obtained a Master's degree in university and higher education pedagogy in 2014 at UCLouvain. She is PhD student at the University of Liège. The title of her thesis to be defended soon is “Simulation in anaesthesia: development of the in situ approach”.
Her research interests are simulation in the training of anaesthetists and improvement of ambulatory surgery practices. Dr Lois is member of several national and international scientific societies.
Giovanna Lurati Buse, MD, PhD

Prof. Dr. Giovanna Lurati Buse is an anaesthesiology consultant at the University Hospital of Düsseldorf, Germany. Her research interest is in perioperative medicine with a focus in cardiovascular outcomes after noncardiac surgery. She was co-chair of the Task Force for the “Guideline on the use of biomarkers to predict cardiovascular events” by the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) and she is member of the ESAIC Scientific Forum “General Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine”.

Basak C. Meco is specialized in neuroanesthesia and geriatric anesthesia. Dr. Meco completed her primary and high school in Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle, Ankara, Turkey (1995). She graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Turkey (2001) and completed her anesthesiology and ICM residency at the same university (2007). She became a Diplomate of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care in 2008 and a Fellow of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care in 2023.
Dr. Meco is an Associate Editor for the European Journal of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and a Section Editor for the Turkish Journal of Anaesthesiology and Reanimation. She is a member of the ESAIC Scientific Committee, Patient Safety and Quality Committee, Nomination Committee, and Examination Committee as well as Council Member of Turkey for ESAIC. She is also a member of the Safe Brain Initiative Research group of the ESAIC. Her major research interests include neuroanesthesiology, geriatric anesthesiology and perioperative cognitive functions.
She is married and has two children, Alp and Deniz.
Anneliese Moerman MD, PhD

Prof. Dr Anneliese Moerman has been working as a cardiac anesthetist at the Ghent University Hospital, Belgium since 1995. She obtained her PhD in 2013 with the thesis “Clinical application of near-infrared spectroscopy in perioperative assessment of cerebral and peripheral tissue oxygenation”. Current clinical research efforts cover cardiovascular physiology with specific interest for the pathophysiology of the perioperative tissue oxygen balance using near-infrared spectroscopy in the adult and pediatric population. As chairman of the Education Committee of the Master of Medicine in Advanced Medicine, chairman of the interuniversity Committee of the Master of Medicine in Advanced Medicine, member of the Dutch-speaking Chamber for Recognition of Medical Specialists in Anesthesia, and member of the advisory and consultative bodies on health of the FPS Health, she is increasingly involved in matters of education and quality of training.
She has authored more than 100 publications. Her Hirsh factor is 27. She holds function in the editorial board of several journals and has served as a reviewer for over 30 journals. She is member of several national and international associations for anesthesiology.

Prof. dr. Mona MOMENI is currently working as anesthesiologist in the Cliniques universitaires Saint Luc in Brussels. Dr. Momeni is specialized in cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia and is particularly interested in congenital cardiac anesthesia. She is currently Director of Research and head of cardiac anesthesia at Cliniques universitaires Saint Luc in Brussels. She is since 2019 Full Professor of Anesthesia at Université Catholique de Louvain in Brussels.
Dr. Momeni’s research is mainly focused on neurological outcome of children and adults undergoing cardiac surgery.
Mona Momeni is chair of the EACTAIC Pediatric and Congenital subcommittee. She is member of the subcommittee Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia of ESAIC as well as Council Member of Belgium for ESAIC. She is also member of the Research Committee of the CCAS. Mona Momeni is Associate Editor for the European Journal of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. She is currently president-elect of the Belgian Society of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management.
Steffen Rex, MD, PhD

Prof. dr. Steffen Rex currently holds the position of Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, University Hospitals Leuven, KU Leuven, Belgium. He has practiced cardiothoracic, vascular and transplant anesthesiology for more than 20 years in Germany and Belgium.
Dr. Rex has authored more than 200 publications and has served as a reviewer for more than 20 journals. His clinical practice is cardiothoracic anesthesia, pediatric (cardiac) anesthesia and perioperative medicine.
His translational research interests are currently centered on the effects of anesthesia on the developing brain. His clinical research interests include observational and interventional trials of various candidate interventions to prevent and treat adverse outcomes following anesthesia and surgery. A special research interest focuses on anesthesia at the extremes of age, including fetal and geriatric anesthesia. His research is funded by public institutions, private philanthropy and by industry. He is member of the board of directors of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC), and of the Belgian Society of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management (BeSARPP).

Anne-Françoise Rousseau obtained her medical degree at the University of Liège (Belgium) in 2004, and she completed her residency in Anesthesiology and in Intensive Care respectively in 2009 and 2010. She is currently working as anesthesiologist and intensivist in the University Hospital of Liège. She is specialized in burn intensive care. She created one of the first Post-ICU follow-up Clinic in Belgium, in the University Hospital of Liège. Since 2018, she is Associate Professor at Faculty of Medicine of the University of Liège.
Anne-Françoise Rousseau’s research is mainly focused on burn intensive care, nutrition in the context of intensive care, and post-ICU outcomes.
She has authored and co-authored more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, some book chapters, and a practical guide to burn care. She acts as regular reviewer for several (mainly nutrition and critical care) journals. She is Associate Editor of the Acta Gastro-Enterologica Belgica.
Anne-Françoise Rousseau is member of the Examinations Subcommitte Part 1 of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC). She is also member of the MEN and the HSRO sections of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, and of the Scientific Committee of the Belgian Society of Clinical Nutrition.
Ayten Saracoglu, MD DESA FEAMS

Following her study in medicine at the University of Gazi, Ankara, Turkey she specialized in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Istanbul Marmara University School of Medicine in 2008. Following an observership at Jena University, Germany, she became an Assistant Professor at the Medical School of Istanbul Bilim University in 2012. In 2015 she was promoted to Associate Professor at the same University, then became a Professor at the Medical School of Marmara University in 2021. She is specialized in neuroanesthesia, cardio-thoracic anesthesia and heart and liver transplantation. Her main interests are airway management, bleeding and hemostasis. Dr. Saracoglu is an Associate Editor of the European Journal of Anaesthesiology. She had tenure as European Society of Anesthesiology (ESA) Scientific Subcommittee member of Critical Emergency Medicine Trauma and Resuscitation for 5 years. Dr. Saracoglu is examiner for European Diploma of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (EDAIC) part II. She has exprience on fetal surgery for spina bifida. Currently she is working in Marmara university, and she is educator in the Asian Society of Pediatric Anesthesiologists (ASPA). She is member of the Membership Committee of Society for Airway Management (SAM) and member of World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA). Dr Saracoglu teaches courses about airway management, trauma, bleeding management and resuscitation at international conferences and several centers both in Europe and Asia.

Laura Gerard, MD
Dr Gerard received her medical degree in 2018 at the Catholic University of Leuven (UCLouvain). She was resident in anaesthesiology from 2018 to 2023 at the Catholic University of Leuven (UCLouvain).
Since October 2023, she is staff member at the Cliniques Universitaires Saint Luc, Brussels, where she works mainly in visceral surgery and anaesthesia outside the operating theatre. She is also involved in quality assurance in the operating theatre. She is a reviewer for Acta Anaesthesiologica Belgica and the European Journal of Anaesthesiology.
Dr Gerard has a specific interest in social media communication and how these tools can improve communication between individuals and professionals.
